YouTube Red was created because the reach of the YouTuber is too great to ignore. So the platform opened the door for subscription-based original content and ad-free viewing. Before you roll your eyes, consider that one of these YouTube stars has a bigger following than Disney, Google, Apple, Samsung, Lady Gaga, and One Direction combined.
PewDiePie is the persona of Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg. He holds the Guinness Book of World Records for the most subscribers of all time, which is well over 41 million. Then factor in that his channel has over 11 billion views.
What is it about Felix Kjellberg that makes him so popular? He’s a gamer. He posts videos of himself playing games and making commentary. Like The Atlantic says in this article, he makes millions playing video games on YouTube.
The gaming industry is bigger than you can possibly imagine. In April 2015, Newzoo predicted the reach in 2015 would be $91.5 billion, and in 2017: $107 billion. All things considered, when you look at the advances of technology, virtual reality, and that at least three generations were raised on video games, these numbers may be understated.
Whether you’re a gamer or not, it is easy to see the appeal when you click onto a PewDiePie video. He has taken his brand offline, too, and not surprising, now has a New York Times bestselling book.
With Disney’s Maker Studios, he created his own network: Revelmode: a “curated talent network united in its passion for gaming and pop culture.”
The Swedish-born video star dropped out of Chalmers University of Technology after a year when his YouTube channel grew too big to ignore.
While some of his commentary can be controversial, lewd, and offensive to some, there is no doubt to the loyalty of his Bro Army. His influence to the video game market could be compared to what Oprah Winfrey‘s influence is to books.
