Self/less (2015) is much like an Outer Limits/Twilight Zone episode but amped up to an action thriller level.
Damian (Ben Kinglsey) is dying. Cancer is ravaging his body, but his mind is healthy. He’s also desperate and wealthy. He finds out about a fellow named Albright (Matthew Goode) who gives him a chance at a second life. Damian undergoes a procedure to transfer his brain into another vessel (Ryan Reynolds). Everything goes according to plan but in order to keep the new brain integrated, he is instructed to take a pill every day.
Damian soon has questions about this new young body after he misses one pill and has a momentary flashback into the other man’s life. It haunts him to the point that he feels compelled to learn more about this man. He visits the man’s home and meets his wife (Natalie Martinez) and daughter (Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen). But he’s supposed to be dead. Having shirked protocol, he learns that Albright’s program wasn’t what it was made out to be. He has now put this family in danger. The three of them flee, and he loses his pills in the process. He needs them to stay alive.
This psychological thriller was written by David and Alex Pastor and directed by Tarsem Singh. It earns five out of five stars.
