Lila & Eve (2015) is raw. It’s real. It’s a kick-ass revenge story. Two mothers, devastated by the loss of their children to gunfire, meet in the Mothers of Angels support group. Meanwhile, the police are unable to find any leads to solve the case and Lila (Viola Davis) is left with the feeling of hopelessness, while Eve (Jennifer Lopez) is hellbent on revenge. While the group’s advice and words of comfort ring hollow, the two women meet regularly and come up with a plan to enact their own form justice. They step into a dangerous world to find the people responsible, but hold their own. Revenge soothes their tears, but only momentarily.
Pat Gilfillan wrote this powerful screenplay, which was directed by Charles Stone III. Shea Whigham, Yolanda Ross, and Will Brittain also star. It initially screened at the Sundance Film Festival in early 2015.
It’s a story, sadly, many families can relate to. It’s not really a feel-good revenge movie, as you feel Lila’s pain throughout the whole journey. That said, it is really well done, and turns into a very good thriller. I give it four stars out of five.
